Location: Martha McKittrick Nutrition

Activities & Assignments:

Monday (8 hours)

  • Met with preceptor regarding what I wanted to get out of this internship
    • Discussed projects and what I will be doing when I am shadowing counseling sessions.
    • Came up with ideas for research/blog posts
      • Trader Joe’s Blog, PCOS Blog, and Fresh Direct 15 quick dinners
  • Started Trader Joe’s Blog
    • Idea is to come up with a list of the best frozen foods at TJ’s
    • Did research to find articles regarding Trader Joe’s frozen foods
  • Familiarized myself with my preceptor’s online project management, charting, and electronic medical records (EMR) tool.
    • Challenge: Figuring out how the online EMR tool worked since I have never used it before.  It was great to learn more about the programs used by private practice dietitians to keep patient charts and records.

Tuesday (8 hours)

  • Observed client session
    • Preceptor asked me for my input during counseling session.
    • Thoughts: It was great to observe my preceptor’s counseling style.  I was happy to be able to chime in and the client seemed to listen and appreciate my input. I’m looking forward to more counseling sessions.
  • Continued working on Trader Joe’s blog
  • Started working on Fresh Direct blog
    • Made a Fresh Direct account and started looking for products to use for the 15 quick dinner blogs

Wednesday (8 hours)

  • Continued to work on Trader Joe’s blog
    • Also made an infographic to see if my preceptor would prefer an infographic for her website.
  • Continued working on Fresh Direct blog
    • Looked at meal kits and analyzed which ones had the best nutritional content

Thursday (8 hours)

  • Continued to work on Trader Joe’s blog
  • Continued working on Fresh Direct blog
  • Observed counseling session
    • Pt. is newly diagnosed with Type 2 DM
      • Thoughts:  I like the way my preceptor explains diabetes to her clients who are newly diagnosed.  Her explanations are clear and easy.  Most of the clients have no knowledge of what foods contain carbohydrates.  My preceptor provides great educational handouts as to what foods contain carbohydrates which the patient really like because it was simple and easy to read.

Friday (8 hours)

  • Researched a B vitamin supplement Metanx/Foltanx RF
    • Thoughts: Not having heard of this supplement, I was interested in conducting research since one of the clients mentioned that the nurse practitioner at his doctor’s office recommended that he take it for his diabetes.  After looking for information about this drug, I found out that this drug is recommended for patients with diabetic nerve damage.  However, I found out that this drug is not FDA approved for this use.
  • Continued working on Fresh Direct Blog.
  • Went to Trader Joe’s to take pictures of the products for the blog entry.
