Monday 5/14 – NONE

Tuesday 5/15 (9 hours and 15 minutes)

  • Tour of the dialysis center given by the lead technician accompanied by preceptor.

      Thoughts:

  • Dialysis Machines – the lead technician explained the basics of the dialysis machines, how many they have, and the tests they conduct on the machines before and after the patient starts treatment.
  • Water – I was taken to the water room in the back and the lead technician explained to me the importance of water in dialysis.
  • We proceeded to the dialysis floor where the lead technician showed me all the materials needed to use for the dialysis machine.
  • The entire tour was extremely interesting since I have never seen dialysis machines up close and never had it explained to me in detail.
  • Rounds
    • First and second shift patients
  • Observed the PA and RD while they were conducting joint rounds.
        • Thoughts:  The care for dialysis patients involves a large interdisciplinary team and it was interesting to observe how different teams work together.
  • Observed dialysis techs hook up and detach patients from the machines.
    • Challenges: The technicians have to work fast to make sure that machines are tested before each new patient.
  • Dialysis notes
    • Worked on patient notes for preceptor to make corrections.
